Straight Up And Personal: The World According To Grapes by Don Cherry

Don Cherry can be called A LOT of things. Best selling author is one of them. He's back in 2014 with  Straight Up and Personal: The World According to Grapes Buy The Book - Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com Here's more from the Publisher: Known for his opinions--and unabashed expression of them--Don Cherry has been causing debate for decades. Topics on "Coach's Corner" sometimes veer away from sports and on to other matters that are near and dear to Cherry's heart: the war in Afghanistan and politics, among many others. In Straight Up and Personal, Cherry shares his thoughts on a broader range of issues than he ever has before. He shares some of his personal experiences on and off the ice, and offers the lessons he's learned along the way. This is Don Cherry: straight up and personal. Joe's Note: For the legions of Don Cherry followers, this will no doubt be a must read. It sounds like he branches out quite a bit, straying from hockey an...

Cornered by Ron MacLean and Kirstie McLellan Day

Ron MacLean, the long time host of Hockey Night in Canada and Don Cherry's punny straight man, is finally coming out with an autobiography. Available in early October 2011, Cornered will undoubtedly share great stories, insight and hilarity. Buy the Book: Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com - Kindle Paperback - Amazon.ca -  Chapters  - Amazon.com Despite what Cherry has said a few times about him during Coach's Corner, Ron MacLean is no dummy. To help him write this book he enlisted the help of Kirstie McLellan Day - the best selling hockey author in the past few years. She has previously penned the blockbuster autobiographies of Theoren Fleury and Bob Probert. The best part of this book will be how much of the real Ron MacLean is revealed. Not the on-camera persona but rather the human side, including his interests outside of hockey, the family man, and his insecurities and weaknesses. McLellan Day was the perfect choice as presenter. Of course, MacLean has...

Don Cherry's Hockey Stories: Part 2

A couple of years ago Don Cherry released a new book called Hockey Stories And Stuff . English teachers everywhere shuddered, but publishers and bookstores celebrated as it was an incredible seller. That should come as no surprise. Neither should the news that Cherry and Random House have teamed up again to produce Don Cherry's Hockey Stories, Part 2 Buy The Book - Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com - E-Book Cherry is back with more rollicking stories and controversial thoughts that make for entertaining book. Whether it be tales of Eddie Shore or Montreal Canadiens training camp or of Darryl Sly snoring through a coach's speech, this book is a lot of fun. But what I like best about Part 2 is that the better part of the second half of the book is told by daughter Cindy and son Tim. To have these two tell stories of their dad allows us an intimate look into the man who is really behind the flamboyant suits and big mouth. That alone makes me recommend Don Cherry's...

Poetic License

On the weekend CBC Radio host Shelagh Rogers interviewed two of the top authors of hockey books in 2008: Don Cherry and Randall Maggs . While hosting the Canadian books/writing show The Next Chapter , Rogers discovers Cherry reads a lot of books, and talks to The Grapes One about his favorite Hollywood biographies. It turns out Cherry is infatuated with Bette Davis. She also talks to poet Randall Maggs about his book, Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems , documenting the troubled life of Terry Sawchuk. The interview is nothing short of fascinating. You can right click to download the podcast right here, or visit The Next Chapter's website .

Don Cherry's Stories And Stuff by Don Cherry with Al Strachan

Being a copy editor must be the worst job in all of publishing. Some people just have the knack for it, but I could not imagine combing through 1000s of words and 100s of pages looking for the tiniest grammar mistakes. God bless these unappreciated and underpaid word-freaks. They have to be the most meticulous people on the planet! That being said, it must have been incredibly hard for the copy editor of Don Cherry's new book Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff . Buy The Book: Amazon - Chapters You see, Don Cherry agreed to the book under one stipulation. "I wanted the book to be like a couple of guys sittin' down with a few pops tellin' hockey stories." Cherry, famous for butchering the English language, wanted to tell the stories "in my own language." "I got to be me" he insisted. So Don goes rambling on, tirades in several direction, losing focus and going off on tangents. Al Strachan transcribes it all rather than writes it, complete...

Grapes vs. Cherry

With the release of Don Cherry's new book Don Cherry's Hockey Stories and Stuff , t he question I know people will be asking is "Which is better? Don Cherry's 1st or 2nd book?" You see, back in the early 1980s Cherry and Stan Fischler teamed up to bring us Grapes: A vintage view of hockey . It was republished in mass market paperback form in 1999. Like Cherry himself, the book has had a cult following and has had a much longer shelf life than most books. I do not know the hard data, but it is fairly safe guess that this book would be classified as a huge success. That book was very similar to his new release, although it at least had proper structure and, aside from Cherry's direct quotes, proper English. He told lots of great stories about his minor league days and his days behind the bench of the Boston Bruins. In his new book Cherry understandably spends more time telling stories about his days on television. He certainly touches on the good ol' days, ...

Don Cherry's Dislike Of The Rock

In the latest installment of the Globe And Mail's excerpt preview of Don Cherry's new book Don talks about his dislike of The Rock. No. Not that Rock. Larry Zeidel. People always ask me who's the toughest guy I ever played with or played against. When you spend your career in the minors, there are a lot of them. Connie (Mad Dog) Madigan. Sandy (Stone Face) Hucul and Bill (The Destroyer) Shvetz. I'll talk about those guys later. But I think the nastiest guy I ever saw was Larry (The Rock) Zeidel. Full Story

Excerpts From New Don Cherry Book Available Online

If you watched Coach's Corner on Hockey Night In Canada on Saturday you saw Don Cherry hawking his new book Don Cherry's Stories & Stuff . The book is released today, October 28th. I previewed the release this past summer, but there is an even better preview available online every day this week at the Globe & Mail's website . The Globe is publishing excerpts of the Cherry's new book, and I have to admit I'm impressed. I really wasn't sure what to expect from a book called "Stories & Stuff," especially one written by Al Strachan of all people. But it looks like Grapes clears the air on more than a few occasions. It's far more than just rock 'em, sock 'em on paper. There are six parts to the Globe and Mail excerpt previews. Here's the two listed to date: Part 1: All About Grapes Part 2: So I Says "What The Hell?" So I'm Going Down Swinging I'll post more as the days go on.
