Book Review: Kevin Shea's The Hall

The new hockey season is upcoming, and that also means a new hockey book season. And if the first hockey book of the new season is going to be any indication, it's going to be a fantastic year for hockey book enthusiasts. Kevin Shea writes The Hall: Celebrating Hockey's Heritage, Heroes and Home . On the Hall of Fame's 75th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary of the Hall's move to the famed Bank of Montreal building in downtown Toronto. The book is billed as "A stunning hardcover book that features dramatic and compelling imagery and uncovers the fascinating history of the Hockey Hall of Fame." It is rare that anything lives up to that type of hype, but this book truly does. With all the photos and features this book serves as both a page turning coffee table book. But there is enough text in here for even the most studied hockey fan to enjoy at length. By now every hockey fan should know a book with Kevin Shea's name on it will be nothing sh...

Super Scorers, Great Goalies And Dominant Defensemen by Eric Zweig

An eye-catching trilogy of kids hockey books (sold separately) by Eric Zweig and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Always a fun read with the kids: Hockey Hall of Fame Kids series Buy The Books - Amazon.ca  - Chapters - Amazon.com Here's more directly from the author: Got back from our trip on Monday to find a box full of my newest hockey books for children. A set of three done for Firefly and their Hockey Hall of Fame series. If you have a boy or a girl within a few years either side of 10, these books are a great way to introduce them to the greats of the game. Focusing mainly on players who played in the 70s, 80s, and 90s (ie, Hall of Famers the parents -- and even grandparents -- of 10 years olds are most likely to have seen play!), there are also "Blasts from the Past" featuring earlier stars, "Modern Matches" pairing Hall of Famers with the stars of today, and photos and memorabilia from the Hall of Fame Archives. I wrote them, so what am I going to say, b...

Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Players

Every few years the Hockey Hall of Fame comes out with a fantastic new book highlighting the greatest players in the history of the game: the enshrined members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. 2013 brings us the  Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Players   . It is right up to date including the 2013 inductees Scott Niedermayer, Brendan Shanahan, Geraldine Heaney and Chris Chelios.   It reminds me a whole lot of the 2011 release  Official Guide To The Players Of The Hockey Hall of Fame . That book was almost a real thick pocket book, where as the new release is in large coffee table format. Which is actually nicer in that the photos that tend to dominate these Hall of Fame books are more enjoyable in the larger size. But other than that the two books have a very similar feel to them. The content is rewritten but essentially says the same thing. This must always be a challenge for the Hockey Hall of Fame. Their tried and true formula with these books is heavy on ...

Accessed Denied: Forgotten and Future Heroes Of Hockey's Hall of Fame

Hockey fans love to debate. And there are few debates more contentious than Hockey Hall of Fame inductions. How can Bernie Federko be included? Or Clark Gillies? Who is Dick Duff? Even more contentious is the list of who is not included in the Hockey Hall of Fame. How could they overlook Brendan Shanahan or Rogie Vachon or Pat Burns? We all have our lists of players and builders who we believe should be in the Hall. My current list consists of Eric Lindros and builders James Creighton and Fran Rider. For the most part, I'm happy with the Hockey Hall of Fame's induction standard right now. They may have lowered the bar for the forwards in recent years, but the standards for goaltenders and defensemen seem about right for me. But I know I am in the minority on that one. Most people think the Halls standards are too low, and that they should be tightened. Not superfan Kris Kullas. He has written the book Access Denied: Forgotten And Future Heroes of Hockey's Hall of Fa...

Hockey Hall of Fame: Book of Jerseys

Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Jerseys  is a celebration of the Hockey Hall of Fame's collection of the best jerseys and sweaters worn in the game.  Buy The Book: Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com The brand-new, never-before-seen photographs of each jersey are paired with in-game action images and player profiles detailing the significance of the jersey and the impact of the player on the league. The selection of near 100 jerseys from star players ranges from the rare and seldom seen, like Hall of Famer Rod Langway's high school championship jersey, to the most famous of garments, like Wayne Gretzky's last-ever jersey. The photography is great and, as is always the case with Hockey Hall of Fame book releases, the glossy presentation is second to none. But author Steve Milton really makes this book into a gem with his interesting player profiles. Many of the players names you will recognize - Gretzky, Howe, Richard, while others you will not - Bobbi-Jo Slusar, ...
