Hockey Greats: Awesome Centres by Mike Leonetti

In what appears to be the first in a series of new titles from Scholastic, veteran childrens/young adult author Mike Leonetti offers us Hockey Greats: Awesome Centres . The book, aimed at ages 9 through 12, looks at the lives and careers of three of hockey's greatest players: Jean Beliveau, Wayne Gretzky and Vincent Lecavalier. The 110 pages are full of surprisingly in depth biographies and color photos as well as statistics and facts. The book is very eye catching and, despite the lack of contemporary star players, the book is sure to be a hit with its intended audience. Knowing nothing about the book previously, I was surprised, almost disappointed, that only three centers were featured. Why not include today's biggest star Sidney Crosby? Or why not the amazing story of cancer survivor Mario Lemieux? As pleased as I was about the quality of the features presented, I would have liked to have seen more players profiled. I suppose that would have come at the expense of spa...

The Mighty Tim Horton by Mike Leonetti

Celebrated children's author Mike Leonetti returns, with side kick illustrator Greg Banning by his side, for the next installment of his hockey history-themed children's books. This time he's back with The Mighty Tim Horton .  Buy the book - Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com This is the latest in long line of hockey history themed children's books by Leonetti. He has the formula down perfectly. The aspiring hockey dreams of our young lead character Trevor are heightened by a chance meeting with his favorite player - Tim Horton of the Leafs. The storyline is inspiring and well done, ready to be enjoyed by your children and yourself as your own hockey memories come back. As always, Banning's illustrations are incredibly realistic and a treat to enjoy on their own. I've never quite understood why kids would want to read a book about a hockey star they've never heard of before. But every kid in Canada knows of Tim Hortons, the iconic coffee and don...

The Battle of Alberta Trivia Book by Mike Leonetti

For a good stretch of time in the 1980s hockey's two best teams came from small cities in the oil rich Canadian prairies of Alberta. The Wayne Gretzky-led Edmonton Oilers and the always scrappy underdog Calgary Flames battled for hockey supremacy even though the two teams could never meet in the Stanley Cup finals. Some of my finest hockey memories of my youth came from the Battle of Alberta. Gretzky's slap shot over Mike Vernon's shoulder in overtime. Theo Fleury dramatically matching that a few years later. Dave Semenko and Tim Hunter wrestling, Marty McSorley spearing Mike Bullard, and Craig MacTavish and the whole Harvey the Hound tongue incident. Of course who will ever forget Steve Smith's goal. So it comes as no surprise when I say I am very excited by Mike Leonetti's new title, The Battle of Alberta Trivia Book by Red Deer Press. Buy The Book - Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com Here's the specs: Paperback: 190 pages Publisher: Red Deer P...

Interview With The Author: Mike Leonetti

Author Mike Leonetti is back with his line of hockey history books aimed at children. In 2009 he has teamed up once again with illustrator Greg Banning to bring us The Rocket , the story of Maurice Richard. Buy the book: | Amazon.ca - Chapters | Full Book Review The book is also available in Canada in French: | Amazon.ca - Chapters | I had the chance to interview the prolific author Leonetti about his new book: 1. You are a well established hockey author who has really embraced writing books aimed at children and youth. Why are you so interested in this audience? When I was youngster I loved just about any book on hockey but in those days there was not much directed at children and youth. I think my kids’ books fill that void today very nicely. The books help to get kids (especially boys) reading at a young age because they like the subject matter. The sooner kids start reading the better off they will be and it will help them improve their communication skills from an early age. ...

The Rocket by Mike Leonetti and Greg Banning

Author Mike Leonetti is back with his line of hockey history books aimed at children. In 2009 he has teamed up once again with illustrator Greg Banning to bring us The Rocket , the story of Maurice Richard. Buy the book: | Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com | The book is also available in Canada in French: | Amazon.ca - Chapters | Previous history-themed children's titles by Leonetti include Wendel and The Great One , Maple Leafs A-Z , Gretzky's Game , The Greatest Goal , The Goalie Mask , Number Four, Bobby Orr! , A Hero Named Howe and My Leafs Sweater . I am always impressed that publishers take a chance on a children's series devoted to hockey players from decades ago. But clearly the series is a success. You better make room for another hit on your bookshelves, because Leonetti's magic is in full force in The Rocket. Leonetti tells the story of Rocket Richard through an aspiring young hockey player named Andre. Andre loves the Rocket, and he loves to play hocke...

Hockey Now by Mike Leonetti

Firefly Books and super-author Mike Leonetti return with the fifth edition of the annual book Hockey Now! Buy The Book: Amazon.ca - Chapters - Amazon.com Hockey Now! celebrates the best players in hockey today. Hockey's most dynamic stars are all profiled, including Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Jarome Iginla, Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Vincent Lecavalier, Ilya Kovalchuk, Dion Phaneuf and Zdeno Chara. In total there are 74 profiled superstars in the 176 glossy paged softcover 5th edition. Each superstar is fully featured with a 2 page well-written biography and the exciting and rich photography. I really liked the sharp, clean hockey card layout. Career statistics might be a nice addition, but the fun facts box insert is a great touch. This fast-paced book is an excellent Christmas gift idea for any puck enthusiast, but especially for the younger or newer/casual hockey fans on your shopping list. That being said, hardcore hockey fans should also consider this title. I...

Wendel And The Great One by Mike Leonetti

Hockey super-author Mike Leonetti annually releases a children's title. Previous titles include Gretzky's Game , The Greatest Goal , The Goalie Mask , Number Four, Bobby Orr! , A Hero Named Howe , Maple Leafs A-Z and the incredibly successful franchise starter My Leafs Sweater . I'm a big proponent of spreading hockey history as Leonetti continues to do, though sometimes I'm surprised today's kids under the age 10 of ten would be interested beyond the great illustrations. But Leonetti usually works the hockey history into a story about a fictional youngster that today's readers can relate to. Leonetti mixes that formula perfectly in his 2008 title Wendel and The Great One . It is published by Scholastic and features the excellent illustrations of Greg Banning. Leonetti's historical focus is on the classic 1993 playoff series between the LA Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is a smart topic, as it allows the writer and publisher to cash in on Gretzky and...
