I remember reading a fictional hockey story in the early 80s or late 70s about a young hockey player that gets a chance to play with the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden,anyone know the name of this story?

Anyone remember a book from the late '60s or early '70s, very nicely illustrated as I recall, about a boy, possibly at a boarding school, who gets/has to play goal, and gets new pads for it? I recall one part in particular about the ice guy being pretty stern and only letting the players on when he was sure "you could drive a tank on it" or something like that.
